I wonder how many here realize how serious is the problem described in the link below?

Many collectors concentrate on their exotics, but just think of the loss of the many natural stands of tall Sabal palmetto throughout the state.

Tom-

My neighbor just lost three of his Sabals apparently to this disease. All three went in short order. He chopped them all down quickly in the hopes that it wouldnt spread to other palms as there is some suspicion that this disease is also affecting Queens, and Phoenix palms.

yes, as per the latest from the good folks at IFAS, this new disease is a phytoplasma like disease - similar to but different from the one that causes lethal yellowing. so...anyone have any experience, anecdotal or otherwise on the use of oxytetracycline (aka Tree Saver) as a prophylaxis in preventing lethal yellows or this new disease??? The only place I recall seeing it was many moons ago on a ?palm society visit to the Ziff-Davis Estate over in Manalapan. If you were there you would not forget - several acres from the Intercoastal to the Atlantic inluding the tunnel room under A1A.

Onward through the fog,

Phil, I remember visiting there with the group (and wound up going a second time later with the Palm Beach chapter). They were using the Tree Saver on the coconut palms. I wonder how long/whether they kept this up. Our visit was about 15 years ago.

I was interested in finding out if this new disease, supposedly out of Texas, had affected any of the Sabals there (S. mexicana)--and what had been done about it--but there was no mention of it in the Texas A & M extension service website. Somebody contacted a Texas friend who said the Sabals there were in far South Texas and, I suppose, either nobody knew or had looked into it. John K

Hmmm.
This explains all the declining, or done Sabals along US41 in the Apollo Beach and GibTown area... I initially thought it was due to being close to the power lines...

I'm seeing the Sabal decline even more and more now along the SouthShore in TBay. Sad SimmonsPark Rd or 10thSt SW in Ruskin has quite a few... Kinda sad to see just below osprey nests on the power lines above them... Sad

This isn't just a land-locked situation.
I've noticed it happening on the surrounding 'spoil islands' around lower TBay aswell... I fish the islands ALOT, and it sux throwing my lure toward the island, then looking up seeing the declining Sabals... Crying or Very sad
We need to get a good grasp on this.
