This has been the deadliest, worse winter I have ever seen. |

I rate this winter the rottenest I've experienced since I moved here in 1997. I bottomed out this morning at 31.6 degrees in the open yard, 35.2 under canopy. Sebring FAWN was 33.85 degrees.
As bad as this winter is, last winter did more damage to my garden, as my lowest low was 23 degrees in the open. January 5, 2001 was even colder, at 22 degrees. Almost everything was wiped out, but I had far less palms and plantings then.
Just tonight on the weather, the weatherman said these below normal temperatures may persist through April. _________________ Where life is easy and sweet here at Walt's Palms and Tropicals Plantation! |

was out at FIT sale today, talked to quite a few growers who said this was either the worst winter they'd experienced, or the worst since '89. For me I'd put it right in the middle, certainly not the best but far far from the worst. As far as damage goes anyway - doubtful I'll lose a single palm but then I'm not as adventurous as others. Plus I'm beginning to think the Orlando heat island has finally extended out here some, area has def. built up in last decade. |

To me this winter was as bad as 95. I lost several and counting. We had frost one night and was below 30 for several hours and burnt everything. It is not the absolute low this time its several factors all rolled into one. I have had nights that were colder then Tampa/Orlando on occasion in the past and had less damage. I have read statistics for years on this palm will take this temp and heat island effect (not directed at your statement Dave) and so on and so on but in the end when its your turn its your turn. I protected nothing so that didn't help but sooner or later you can't cover that coconut any longer if you know what I mean. I hope all did better than me. |

Again, I rate this winter the rottenest I've had thus far just due to the almost innumerous number of days I had below (much below) normal temperatures. I've dropped into the 30s the past three mornings.
Now we are heading for some closer to normal temperatures. At least I hope from here on out we don't see anymore 30s for nighttime lows.
You recall I posted some temperature statistics the other day. Well, I also checked the Ft. Lauderdale FAWN to see how it fared over the past four Januarys (2007-2010). Here is what I found:
This trend is consistent with five other FAWN stations I've checked in central and north Florida.
January 2007
Monthly avg. temperature: 70.65 degrees
Lowest temperature: 45.18 degrees
Highest temperature: 85.03 degrees
January 2008
Monthly avg. temperature: 67.76 degrees
Lowest temperature: 37.21 degrees
Highest temperature: 86.47 degrees
January 2009
Monthly avg. temperature: 65.18 degrees
Lowest temperature: 37.27 degrees
Highest temperature: 85.96 degrees
January 2010
Monthly avg. temperature: 61.10 degrees
Lowest temperature: 33.61 degrees (with 5 nights below 40 degrees)
Highest temperature: 85.32 degrees _________________ Where life is easy and sweet here at Walt's Palms and Tropicals Plantation! |

I just stumbled across official weather data on Brooksville the past couple days - what the heck is with that place? It's March and they're still experiencing mid 20s. Also they had an actual low of 16F on 1/11/10. Scary place.

Archbold Biological Station (8 miles south of Lake Placid) recorded 21 degrees a few days ago, while I recorded 31.6 degrees.
I dropped into the upper 30s again this morning (37.4 degrees), while Sebring FAWN was 42.40 degrees. I'm in a cold pocket, but ABS is in a serious cold pocket.
Last Friday my parents had to bring their little dog over to my place so I could watch him all day while they drove down to Ft. Myers. They arrived at my house at 6:15 A.M. When they left their house (lake front property) their car thermometer showed 42 degrees. When they arrived at my house (five miles away) it was 34 degrees!
When they left my house and started driving south down US 27 towards Venus (close to ABS), they said it got even colder than at my house. _________________ Where life is easy and sweet here at Walt's Palms and Tropicals Plantation! |

Definitely the longest cold winter in the 30 yrs I have lived here but far from being the worst. Winter 1989-90 was the absolute worst. That was when queen palms and pygmy dates were mostly wiped out in Orlando. Even Washintonia and CI Dates were burnt, Rhapis, Senegal Dates and Paurotis mostly killed back to the roots.Trees like citrus, grevillea and jacaranda were severely injured or killed outright. Even normally hardy plants like sweet viburnum and azaleas were injured as it had been very warm then, bam, 2 nights at 19-20F so they hadn't gone dormant. Spring of 1990 was very brown and depressing. _________________ Eric

The one consolation about being in a cold spot (at night) is that the daytime highs are opposite. I hit 79 degrees here today, which I think is about average for this date. _________________ Where life is easy and sweet here at Walt's Palms and Tropicals Plantation! |
